Your Own Brand After Years of Selling Other People's: The Best Decision or the Costliest Mistake

You have sold other people's brands for years and dream of your own. Before you invest the first euro, it is worth knowing where the conflict with your supplier hides and what it could really cost.

You have been selling other people's brands for years

You have been distributing other people's brands for years and you are thinking about your own.

More than money is at stake. So is the relationship with the supplier who has been filling your shelves for years, and the business that pays your people's salaries today. That is why it is worth asking a few questions before you invest the first euro.

A conflict with the supplier and the cost of capital

The first is conflict with the supplier. You distribute someone else's brand exclusively and launch your own competing one. The supplier may see a conflict of interest and reconsider the relationship.

The second is capital. Private label needs money for development, production, packaging, marketing and certification. Whoever underestimates the cost puts the core business at risk.

The third is cannibalisation. If your own brand eats into sales of the distributed one, you lose revenue from the supplier and gain nothing new.

What to check before you launch a private label

Read the contract carefully. When it says "exclusive distribution", that often means restrictions on competing products. Whether that also covers your own brand depends on the wording of the contract and on how the supplier reads it.

Work out how long you can last without a return. Private label often needs a long period before the first results, and if you cannot sustain a year or more, the risk is high.

Judge whether your brand cannibalises or complements. The same segment, the same price and the same channels make cannibalisation likely. A different segment, a different price and different channels amount to diversification.

Reduce the risk with small steps. Test one product, in one channel, in one market, and expand if it works.

A private label is a long-term investment

If the supplier is critical to your business, think about whether private label is worth the risk. And do not treat it as quick money. It is a long-term investment in your own value, and you pay for it with patience.

Before you invest in your own brand, describe your plan, the investment and your relationship with existing partners. You will get a structured report on risks and options.
