A new market is not an escape from problems at home

Growth in a foreign market sounds logical, but you are spending money you spent years earning. When entering makes sense, and when it only multiplies the problems you already have.

A step that sounds logical

Opening a new market sounds like a natural step in growth. But a new market is not just new territory, it also brings new risks.

Enter too early and you spend resources on a market you do not understand. Enter too late and competitors take the position you could have had. The difficulty lies in recognizing the right moment.

When a new market is an opportunity and when it is an escape

If your home market is stable and profitable, you have a base: revenue is steady, processes are defined, and the team works without you. A new market can then be an upgrade.

If growth at home has stalled and you hope a foreign market will save it, it will only multiply the problems. A foreign market has no patience for your chaos.

A good signal is a concrete opportunity: an inquiry from a customer, partner or distributor in that market. A wish to grow is not a strategy, it is hope.

A new market looks easier than it is

The new market looks easier than it is. Whoever thinks it is just the same thing in another language underestimates the risk. Customers, channels, regulation and competition differ more than they seem to.

Resources get spread across too many fronts. When you open a market, launch a new product and change the team all at once, nothing will succeed. A new market demands focus.

Many people do not allow for how long it takes. A market rarely turns a profit in the first year, and you must be able to endure 12 to 18 months of investment without return without endangering the company at home.

What to do before the first investment

Start with a test, not an investment. One customer, one partner, one channel, no office and no team.

Find a local partner. Knowledge of language, culture, regulation and channels can shorten the road by years, but a partner represents your brand and is not just a distributor, so choose carefully.

Before entering, define success and failure: how many customers, how much revenue, how many months to payback.

Cap the budget and the time for the test. If it does not work within that frame, withdraw without harming the home business. Quitting on time is part of strategy.

A plan, not enthusiasm

This is a decision that needs a plan, not enthusiasm.

If you are thinking about a new market, describe your product, the market and your resources. You will get a structured report on risks and options before the first investment.
