A consultant or just a structured check: how not to face an irreversible decision alone
Before signing a contract that is hard to undo, there is nobody to ask you the hard question. Do you need a consultant, or is a structured check enough.
A decision you do not want to make alone
Not every decision is worth a consultant. But there are evenings when you sit over a contract you must sign in the morning and realise there is nobody to tell you: stop, look at this once more.
That loneliness in decision-making is one of the costliest risks for a distributor's owner, and it is rarely discussed. The question is how to recognize the line before the decision becomes expensive.
When a decision leaves no room for error
An exclusive agreement, a partnership, a larger investment. These are decisions you cannot reverse within 30 days, and you carry the consequences for years: in money, in the relationship with your partner, in sleepless nights when things go wrong.
Such a decision deserves another pair of eyes, because there a mistake is not a correction but a permanent cost.
When no one else looks at the decision
Trouble starts when you have no lawyer, no financial director and no experienced colleague to look at the decision from another angle.
The second trap is the arithmetic. Imagine a decision where a mistake could cost 50,000 EUR while a review costs 1,000 EUR. The sum is clear. If the mistake would cost 5,000 EUR, the same review may not be reasonable. So compare the cost of the mistake with the cost of the check, not with a feeling.
When a consultant is not needed
If you make the decision every day, you have the experience to make it now. If you can change it within a week, an outside consultant is probably overkill.
An external engagement makes sense only when internal people cannot, or should not, be the objective voice.
What to check before hiring a consultant
Ask for previous clients and concrete results. If the consultant cannot give examples, that is a red flag.
Before you sign, define what the consultant should do: which decisions, which options, what deadline.
A consultant helps you see options and risks. The final decision is yours, and so is the responsibility.

A consultant is not a guarantee of the outcome
A consultant is not a guarantee of outcome. Even the best one can be wrong. If you are looking for a guarantee, nobody can give it, you can only reduce the risk.
So the right question is whether you need a consultant or simply a structured check. Expert Consilium provides a structured multi-perspective analysis, without hiring a consultant, and asks the hard question before you sign. If you need a fast, accessible second angle, that may be the right solution.
